How do we know what to say in any given situation? Jesus told stories that we can relate to - but with a twist. Perhaps it’s knowing your audience and seeing the “twist” in the story that brings the “wise words”. God helps us find the wisest words.

The story of Jesus feeding a crowd of hungry people is a miracle story that is told over and over in the Bible. Why is this story more popular than any other in the New Testament? Is it the drama and intrigue of the amazing miracle of hundreds of people being fed with a couple of fish and a few loaves of bread? Or is it because of all the other miracles revealed in the story? Miracles still happen!

In 1976 shortly after Stampede, a young family moved to Calgary from Vancouver and sought a new church home. They identified four possible worship locations and elected to start with St Andrew's first. At that time the leadership was under Rev. Les Files. After attending worship at St. Andrew’s that Sunday, we never ventured any further to consider the remaining churches, and had our membership transferred to our new church home.

On Sunday July 5, Kaylen Kendra Kathleen Anderson, daughter of Kerrie & Kevin Anderson, was baptized here at St. Andrew’s. We, the congregation, promised to guide and nurture Kaylen, encouraging her to follow the way of Christ, and to be a faithful member of his church. With love, and with prayer, may it be so.

On August 23, come and enjoy farm fresh corn, tasty burgers, and hot dogs. The Men’s Group is hosting this event for the second consecutive year, and we hope to have some interesting entertainment. So come join us Sunday, August 23 immediately after worship and be part of this exciting event! As usual, a freewill offering will be taken to offset costs. Please add your names to the sign-up sheet in the Foyer so we know how many to prepare for!

Neechi Mart is an Indigenous led program led by Kate Webb-Harris and Willy Anderson. Kate and Willy were introduced to St. Andrew’s through Rev. Layne Kilbreath and Bill Judd. St. Andrew’s began hosting Neechi Mart in February 2025. Most Wednesdays, people come to shop at the food mart, enjoy a community lunch, and learn cultural crafts. St. Andrew’s offers space to participate in smudge and prayer led by a knowledge carrier, and a safe place for people who are hungry and hurting to find community. The need has grown. On July 15th, 2026 there were 10 volunteers supporting 58 shoppers (shopping for 16 elders/seniors, 57 children, and 81 adults). 77 lunches were served. 289 people were supported through Neechi-Mart on that day alone.

As summer provides a much needed break from ‘regular’ activities, we’d love it if you would bring out your ‘inner photographer’, and take some pictures of your summer activities, then share them with us in our September ConnXions. You can send them to ConnXions@StAndrewsCalgary.ca 

The Rainbow Team would like to continue its intentional focus by starting a support group for parents and grandparents of children (no matter their age) who identify as 2SLGBTQI+. The group, which will be facilitated by a psychologist, will meet monthly beginning in October.
If you have questions about the group or would like to join the group, please speak with a member of the Rainbow Team. Team members are Lynn Judd, Deanne Barrett, Kim McLauchlin, Derek Wilkinson, Rhonda Wishart, Cathy Millar, Stephanie Werle and myself, Linda Johnson. As a team we would also like to thank you, the members of St. Andrews, for your encouragement and support.

This summer we mark the end of Rev. Geoffrey Simmons’ contract with St. Andrew’s. His final day will be July 5th. We are thankful that Rev. Geoffrey and Joan will continue to call St. Andrew’s their church home. There will be opportunities in the future for Geoffrey to provide leadership at St. Andrew’s ~ yet to be determined. While his role with St. Andrew’s is changing, the love and place he has in our hearts remains the same.
St. Andrew’s Session and Rev. Laurie have been working on the best ways to ensure we continue to work on our identified priorities for 2026.

September 13th will be an exciting service for ALL of us at St. Andrew’s, whether you are part of our morning (English) or afternoon (Nuer) worshipping congregations. Our youth and their leaders will lead worship as they share their experiences at Collective (youth conference in Ontario) this summer. Mark your calendars for a change for BOTH our morning and afternoon worship services, as we will be having ONE JOINT SERVICE AT 12:00 NOON, followed by a pot luck feast in Trinity Hall. We know the fall is a ‘ways off’, but we wanted to make sure we give lots of notice about the change in time!

The Presbyterian Church in Canada has made a commitment to continue listening and learning from Indigenous people, leaders, Elders and Knowledge Keepers, welcoming and engaging voices from both within and beyond The Presbyterian Church in Canada. Together, we now listen and learn about smudging.
Alana Manybears taught us during the Smudge Kit Making event at St. Andrew's that smudging strengthens prayer. When we stand before the smudge, we wave our hands from the smoke to our head, arms, legs, etc. ending with the heart and we pray in our own language.
I have confirmed with a number of knowledge carriers that smudging is similar to the Biblical and ancient practice of burning incense to purify and sanctify both the space and those participating in prayer to enhance our prayers and connection with God.

In order to raise awareness of the needs of Indigenous Peoples, every 9 August commemorates the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, chosen in recognition of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations held in Geneva in 1982.
There are an estimated 476 million Indigenous Peoples in the world living across 90 countries. They make up less than 6 per cent of the world's population, but account for at least 15 per cent of the poorest. They speak an overwhelming majority of the world’s estimated 7,000 languages and represent 5,000 different cultures.
Indigenous Peoples are inheritors and practitioners of unique cultures and ways of relating to people and the environment.

This gathering carries particular importance in our current social and political climate. Across Alberta, many members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, especially transgender and gender-diverse people, are facing increased scrutiny, uncertainty, and hostility. In this context, the public presence of affirming faith communities and community organizations matters. This service offers an opportunity to stand together, make support visible, and affirm that 2SLGBTQIA+ people are valued, celebrated, and deserving of safety, dignity, and belonging.
This annual gathering brings together people from across Calgary’s diverse faith communities, community organizations, and 2SLGBTQIA+ communities for an evening of reflection, celebration, solidarity, and hope.

The following ‘Learn & Chat with a Knowledge Keeper Series’ is a co-sponsored opportunity (Kingsland & Acadia social worker, Aboriginal Friendship Centre, and St. Andrew’s) to support one of our fundamental commitments: We will continue to listen and learn from Indigenous people, leaders, Elders and Knowledge Keepers, welcoming and engaging voices from both within and beyond The Presbyterian Church in Canada. Many know Alana from our St. Andrew’s 2019 Pow Wow, as she is the cultural teacher with the Aboriginal Friendship Centre, a long-time friend of St. Andrew’s. EVERYONE is warmly welcome to join any or all of these opportunities (June 17, July 8 and July 22) from 6:00 – 7:30 pm in Trinity Hall.
