Aug 30, 2026 - To Be A Blessing

Rev. Terry Fach

We humans need stories that ground us and give us a sense of purpose. The Bible’s foundational travel narrative is the story of God calling Abraham and blessing him so that he and his family could bless the world. Because of Abraham’s faith, God in Christ is calling us today to be a blessing, to help God heal the world God loves.

Ministers in Association

Fancy titles for beloved people! We’ve said before that St. Andrew’s has an abundance of riches in our Ministers in Association, and indeed we do.
When I looked at the Presbyterian Church in Canada’s website to see what information I could find on ‘Ministers in Association’, my favorite phrase from their article was the following, describing the relationship between the congregation and the Minister(s) in Association:  THE TYPE OF SERVICE PROVIDED WILL VARY FROM PLACE TO PLACE DEPENDING ON THE NEEDS OF THE CONGREGATION AND THE GIFTS OF THE MINISTER. Doesn’t that make wonderful sense?
In scripture we read “we have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us”; “there are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them”;  and “each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”
Many parents tell of how their children may have similarities, but are also very different, with different strengths and abilities. And so it is with Peter, Jean, Clay and Fiona. They each have individual gifts that have helped us ~ and continue to help us ~ learn and grow as people who love God, and want to know God more. They serve as examples, as mentors, as leaders who model the way of faithful servants - using their gifts to serve others. May we all learn to walk this path of sharing the gifts God has given us with each other and the world around us. And may we always remember how blessed we are that our Ministers in Association feel called to share their individual gifts with us!

From the Parking Project Team

From the Parking Project Team

The City contractor arrived unannounced last Monday to reconstruct the driveway entrance from Heritage along with other work on Heritage Drive. After discussion with the site supervisor, the driveway will be formed in two halves to allow continued access to church property. Work is expected to take place over 2-3 weeks. Updates will be provided as we learn further information. Unrelated work along Heritage may cause increased impact as city work progresses between Elbow Drive and Haddon Road. You will still be able to access our parking lot from Heritage Drive using half of the present driveway - just be careful as you turn into or out of the parking lot. The rear lane will remain open during the extent of this work.

Maintenance Work at the Church

Maintenance Work at the Church

This summer there is MUCH going on in and around our building. The following dates are if everything goes as planned. Information will be provided as needed. We suggest calling the office if you need access to a potentially affected space.

Friday August 7 to Saturday August 22 – flat roof will be replaced. There will be dumpsters on site and parts of the parking lot will be blocked off. Access via the back door will be restricted.

Tuesday August 25 to Sunday August 30 – flooring is being replaced in the CE wing. Trinity Hall and the CE wing will be affected by this work.
We ask for, and appreciate, everyone’s patience and understanding.

Calgary’s 2026 City-Wide Pride Interfaith Service

Calgary’s 2026 City-Wide Pride Interfaith Service

Aug 30 at 7:00 pm

Hello, on behalf of the City-Wide Pride organizing team, I’m pleased to invite you to attend Calgary’s 2026 City-Wide Pride Interfaith Service. The service will take place:
Sunday, August 30, 2026 at 7:00 pm
McDougall United Church (8516 Athabasca Street SE, Calgary)
This gathering carries particular importance in our current social and political climate. Across Alberta, many members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, especially transgender and gender-diverse people, are facing increased scrutiny, uncertainty, and hostility. In this context, the public presence of affirming faith communities and community organizations matters. This service offers an opportunity to stand together, make support visible, and affirm that 2SLGBTQIA+ people are valued, celebrated, and deserving of safety, dignity, and belonging.
This annual gathering brings together people from across Calgary’s diverse faith communities, community organizations, and 2SLGBTQIA+ communities for an evening of reflection, celebration, solidarity, and hope.
Rev. Bill Weaver

Preaching Grace 2026: The Cost of Ambition - with Miroslav Volf

Preaching Grace 2026: The Cost of Ambition - with Miroslav Volf

What is our ambition costing us - and is there a better way to pursue a meaningful life? That’s the question Yale Theologian, author, and one of the most influential Christian voices of our generation - will explore at Grace Presbyterian Church September 18 - 20.
Drawing on his work on ambition, comparison, and the good life, Dr. Volf will push past the workplace clichés about success and ask what a genuinely flourishing life looks like.

The weekend:

  •         Friday, Sept 18 — Free public lecture with Miroslav Volf
  •         Saturday, Sept 19 — Full-day workshop with catered lunch and Q&A (Cost is $65, students $35)
