October 12, 2025 - Unexpected Thanks

October 12, 2025 - Unexpected Thanks

Rev. Laurie McKay

Some are more likely to cry out to the Mystery of Life when things are not perfect and forget to give thanks when good things are happening.  Sometimes the people who are the most thankful seem to be living in less than perfect circumstances. In the story of the 10 lepers, Jesus heals them all.  The surprise is who takes the time to say, “Thank you!”

One more step in our work of truth and reconciliation. ~ Deb

On August 21, St. Andrew’s hosted an evening entitled ‘Let’s Talk Reconciliation’.  This was a partnership evening between St. Andrew’s, the community, and some of our Indigenous friends.  It was well attended, with about 30 people from all three areas mentioned above.  We received the following THANK YOU from Viviana Reinbert, the Community Social Worker, Neighbourhood Strategies, The City of Calgary.  We will let her words reflect the thankfulness of all who attended:

Hello Rev. Laurie, Margaret, Linda, Bill, Debby
I’ve been meaning to say thank-you for all the support you provided to make this event such a great activity; and I’m hoping it’s not too late to do so.  From offering space, to helping with the booking of the room, doing promotion, arranging the set-up, baking feather cookies, being there to open the door, and just being there attending the session;  each of these things helped make the event happen.  Alphonse was very pleased with the result of the conversation, saying that it went better than he had anticipated, as he felt supported in his work.  Others who attended also gave me positive feedback saying that they learned something new that day.  This is something that gives me hope because it means that the small things we do towards reconciliation do make a difference.
Would you please extend my thank-you’s to everyone.
~   Vivianna

Intergenerational Christmas Musical

Intergenerational Christmas Musical

Sunday, November 23

This year our musical will focus on what it truly means to belong.  Gloria is a young girl who’s been adopted and is a little unsure about sharing her story.  She finds the courage to open up, discovering that Christmas is actually a story of adoption too.  Just like she was lovingly chosen by her family, we’ve been lovingly adopted into God’s family.
You are never too YOUNG or too OLD to participate.  The more the merrier!   Practices will be set up once I know the best times for the people who are able to sing with us.  Add your name to the sign up sheet in the Foyer, and I’ll be in touch once practice dates have been set.  Come join us for the fun, and the music and message of Christmas!!

Sanctuary Mental Health Program: You are invited

Sanctuary Mental Health Program: You are invited

St.  Andrew’s will offer a free program this fall (Tuesdays, Oct 7-Nov 25 @ 7:00 pm) focusing on mental health. This course will help raise awareness and start conversations about mental health.
The program is free.
With one in four Canadians experiencing mental health challenges, The Sanctuary Course equips churches as they seek to become sanctuaries where people with mental health challenges feel safe, supported, and a sense of belonging.

Caring and Connecting Corner

Wellness has many dimensions. The pink tax—paying higher costs for essentially the same product—is something that women and gender-diverse individuals face frequently. Wellness can be a justice issue, especially when extra costs, or longer waits, affect an individual’s wellbeing and health. If you want to read more about this,
