May 3, 2026 - Table Talk Takeaways

Rev. Laurie McKay - Easter 4

What will happen to the disciples once Jesus leaves? Jesus offers promises and commands to the disciples in his final discourse around the table. As we come to the table, what is Jesus promising and commanding us?

So many 'YESES!'

And we thank you for them!
We currently have many sign-up sheets in our Foyer - a sure sign of a busy church!! And we have had many of you say YES! already, which is a sure sign you are at St. Andrew’s.
So many of you volunteer when needed.
Thank you especially for responding to the call for Dramatic Readers and AV Volunteers. We can never have too many, though, so there is still room for your name to be added if you are interested.
We also had someone say YES! as someone willing to post regularly to our Facebook and Instagram pages. Debby, Kevin & Barbara are thrilled to add Karen MacLeod to our Communications Team!
We still need help with our flower beds and flower pots. If you enjoy the out-of-doors and can volunteer an hour or so a week, we would be most appreciative.
And the Facilities Team would be grateful for help at our Spring Clean-up on Saturday, May 9th (starting at 9:00 am). All ages and skill levels are welcome! Sign up, or speak with Matt Nolette if you can help.
‘The Dress’ isn’t the only thing that needs a YES!

#5 in our series

The March 14th workshop with biblical scholar Rev. Dr. Patricia Dutcher-Walls empowered each participant to develop a statement of faith around inclusion. We've been sharing them each week in LinX.
Here is another example:
I think that God is a God who is accepting of everyone just as they are. God shuns no one. Because of this belief, and because of my love for God and the empowerment I experience from God’s love of me, I believe everyone is entitled to feel the love and grace from God and each other.

Ladies Guild

Ladies Guild

Two more weeks to go to support the Ladies Guild Mother’s Day Shower for Basically Babies! Requested items should be new or clean, very gently used.
There will be a play-pen set-up in the foyer on the next two Sundays May 3 and 10 with samples of some of the items we’re collecting and where you can drop off your donations.  You may choose to make a financial donation instead through the Ladies Guild (email to: ladiesguild@standrewscalgary.ca) or directly to Basically Babies at basicallybabies.org, mentioning the St. Andrew’s Ladies Guild Baby Shower. We sincerely thank you in advance for your support!

A New Covenant between English and Nuer Speaking Congregations at St. Andrew's

A New Covenant between English and Nuer Speaking Congregations at St. Andrew's

Are you aware?
In 1998, many Nuer-speaking people from South Sudan arrived in Calgary looking for a worship space. As Presbyterians in South Sudan, they found a home at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. They have been worshipping at St. Andrew’s and integrated into the work of St. Andrew’s minimally, usually through a liaison member or group.

While at times St. Andrew’s has seen the Nuer congregation as a mission sharing space, St. Andrew’s has also baptized and ordained elders, led communion, and been the fiscal agent for donations for the Nuer congregation. We have now created a Covenant between our communities to clarify our relationship. We trust that God is in our midst. “There is one Lord, one faith, and one baptism. One God and Father of all who is above all, through all, and in all.” (Ephesians 4:5-6).

As we grow into relationship, the covenant clarifies how we will intentionally integrate our ministry with youth, mission, communication, celebration, and leadership.

Here are some things that you might find interesting about the Nuer Community:

  • There are 35 youth in the Nuer youth group who meet on Saturdays. They learn the Nuer language through song. This is one way to keep the language alive because most children/teens born in Canada are more fluent in English. There are 12 youth and 5 leaders from both Nuer and English communities attending the Youth Collective Conference in St. Catharines this August. There are up to 20 youth in the weekly Friday English youth group. Plans for joint youth gatherings are being made – quite a group with a potential of 55 youth!
  • There are approximately 75 people in the Nuer community who worship weekly Sunday afternoons (most often in Trinity Hall, occasionally in the Sanctuary). The Nuer congregation has more children and youth than adults, and seniors are the minority.
  • There are 5 women elders, with Thomas to be ordained shortly. The elders’ primary role is leadership and pastoral care of the community. Two elders from the Nuer congregation will now be invited to participate in our session meetings. The primary mission for the Nuer congregation is to support refugees from South Sudan, both sponsoring and welcoming new arrivals as well as supporting those who have lost family in Sudan.
  • We intend to support this work and our Sudanese brothers and sisters.
  • The minister of St. Andrew's will support the Nuer worship and communion (4 times per year), ordination, and special functions as needed. We anticipate a joint service in early fall to celebrate the covenant and to hear from the youth and leaders returning from the Collective Conference.

We seek to be a blessing to each other and to the world as one community: St. Andrew’s Presbyterian. As an inclusive community, we make space for different languages, cultures, and expressions of worship.

~ Rev. Laurie

Sometimes you just need to say something...

Sometimes you just need to say something...

And so Rev. Laurie has written a letter to Albertans to challenge the questions that target new arrivals to Canada on the upcoming referendum.

Rev. Laurie’s letter can be read by CLICKING HERE

Along with Rev. Laurie's letter, others are speaking out about the impact that the referendum questions have in weakening the voice of Albertans. Surely these questions distract from the larger issues facing health, social, and education services. Read the letter from International Migrant Alliance of Alberta.
