June 7, 2026 - The Sacrament of Doubt

June 7, 2026 - The Sacrament of Doubt

Rev. Peter Coutts (Communion)

Every Christian will experience doubts about their faith at times, and many Christians think doubts are dangerous. But what if we start with the notion that doubts can strengthen our faith?

Grateful, Thankful, Blessed

Grateful, Thankful, Blessed

Psalm 127 (The Message) says: “Don’t you see that children are God’s best gift? “ And indeed they are!

On Sunday, May 31 we were blessed by our children as they led ‘Adult time’ and taught us the lesson of Moses and the Israelites crossing the Red Sea. How before they actually got to cross, they had to live through… rivers turning to blood, frogs, gnats, flies, sick and dying livestock, boils, hail, locusts, darkness on the land, death of first born sons. Their re-enactment of the story was so real we were all scratching ourselves, sure that we could feel the gnats and flies!!! Special thanks to Adam Stolee, who wrote and directed the play. Even if you were in the Sanctuary on Sunday, you should go back and rewatch it - you’ll see something new every time.
And the story of Moses will literally come ‘alive’ for you!

Cookies during Coffee Hour

Cookies during Coffee Hour

This Sunday (June 7) our youth and leaders who will be attending COLLECTIVE in Ontario this summer will be hosting their last ‘cookie fundraiser’ in the Karl English Lounge following morning worship. We have 12 youth and 5 leaders from St. Andrew’s attending, and any financial assistance we can provide will be greatly appreciated. Due to increased costs in flights, we are hoping to raise lots of money, so enjoy every cookie crumb, and give as you can!

Church School Update

Church School Update

As the school year winds down, our church school year is wrapping up as well. The children enjoyed a wonderful end-of-year celebration on May 31. Although the wrap-up party has taken place, our dedicated Faith Formation leaders will CONTINUE TEACHING THROUGH SUNDAY, JUNE 21.
There will be no church school during the summer months. We will resume our regular schedule in September. During the summer, children are warmly welcomed to stay with us in the sanctuary during worship. If they need a break or a quieter space, the nursery is always available. Activity sheets can also be found at the back of the sanctuary for children to enjoy during the service.

ACCESS RESTRICTIONS TO PARKING LOT

ACCESS RESTRICTIONS TO PARKING LOT

As feared and explicitly expressed during preliminary discussions with adjacent developers, heavy traffic through the parking lot and truck staging on church property has become an issue. There are concerns of safety and damage to pavement. Meetings with construction site personnel have been positive and they have issued instructions to their contractors. However, the problem persists.
Contractors who are heeding the caution presently have to back up in the lane from the west entrance on Heritage to the construction site, since it is impossible to turn a large truck in the narrow space. This poses a further risk to local residents and others who frequently use the lane.
St Andrew's has elected to close the south exit to the lane and install barricades to resolve concerns. However, in the spirit of good neighbourly cooperation and further safety concern for adjacent residents, the barricade will form a 'U' shape that will allow trucks to travel forward down the lane and nose into the church barricade to allow safe completion of a U turn to the construction site. In turn, the contractor has committed to install the barricades, undertake any required damage repairs and provide any local grade improvements on church property upon completion of work.
These restrictive measures will remain in place until fall when most of the heavy construction should be complete. This problem could resurface when eventual activity commences on the adjacent 'tennis court' site.
The barricades will impact recycling operations at the garbage enclosure but these are controlled by St. Andrew's and will require temporary removal of the barricade and repositioning. Upon notice from the office, the Parking Team will arrange for necessary access.  Please forward any comments or concerns to Mark Rowe or me and we will address. Thank you for your understanding.

Father’s Day Treat

Father’s Day Treat

On Christian Family Sunday/Mother’s Day, the men’s group provided a special treat to be enjoyed during coffee hour. We’re now challenging the women of the congregation to provide a special treat on Sunday, June 21 during coffee hour as we celebrate fathers. The Ladies Guild will make coffee and tea that Sunday and host our coffee hour, but if you can provide cookies or squares that day, please add your name to the sign-up sheet in the Foyer or call the church office at 403.255.0001. Thanks so much!!

‘Why do we have Pride Month in June and Pride Week in August/September?’

‘Why do we have Pride Month in June and Pride Week in August/September?’

This question has been asked of our Rainbow Team. Please click the button at the end of this article to read Linda Johnson’s explanation about Pride Month and Pride Week!!

For Calgarians this year, Pride Week is taking place August 31 to September 6, 2026. For over 35 years Calgary Pride has brought communities together to celebrate visibility, creativity, and belonging.
One of St. Andrew’s stated values is “Accepting: honouring different ways of thinking, perspectives, languages, cultures, races and genders, enabling the Spirit’s creative spark to bring forth new possibilities.” A second stated value is “Welcoming: Inviting you to experience God’s presence and love in community, whoever you are and whatever your circumstances. We affirm that gender and sexuality are gifts of God, and welcome people of all sexual orientations and gender identities.

A Free Companion Program for people living with advanced illness

A Free Companion Program for people living with advanced illness

The Osten-Victor Living with Advanced Illness Centre works with individuals living with advanced illness and their families to facilitate connections and independence and promote quality of life. The program is intended for adults (18+) with a life-limiting diagnosis. People can sign up at the time of diagnosis or any time after. Some examples of a life-limiting diagnosis include Diabetes, Kidney Failure, Cancer, Alzheimer’s, Dementia, and Parkinson's.
Companions are carefully matched with individuals and families to help them connect with people, resources, and services in their communities through a “best fit” family-centric approach. The program aims to help reduce stress and feelings of isolation in individuals, caregivers, and their families and promote an active role in living life to the fullest during illness.
IT’S FREE!      Check out the information and video here.

Goals of the Companion Program:

  • Enhance the quality of life for individuals and families facing any advanced illness.
  • Provide support and encouragement through meaningful companionship.
  • Assist clients in engaging in what is meaningful to them.
  • Inform clients about appropriate resources in the community.
  • Offer assistance with other practical supports.

Learn & Chat with a Knowledge Keeper

Learn & Chat with a Knowledge Keeper

In response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s call to action by the Presbyterian Church in Canada, St. Andrew’s is committed to nurture and support various initiatives of the congregation, Indigenous organizations, and people of our community, encouraging positive relationships.
The following ‘Learn & Chat with a Knowledge Keeper Series’ is a co-sponsored opportunity (Kingsland & Acadia social worker, Aboriginal Friendship Centre, and St. Andrew’s) to support one of our fundamental commitments: We will continue to listen and learn from Indigenous people, leaders, Elders and Knowledge Keepers, welcoming and engaging voices from both within and beyond The Presbyterian Church in Canada. Many know Alana from our St. Andrew’s 2019 Pow Wow, as she is the cultural teacher with the Aboriginal Friendship Centre, a long-time friend of St. Andrew’s. EVERYONE is warmly welcome to join any or all of these opportunities (June 17, July 8 and July 22) from 6:00 – 7:30 pm in Trinity Hall.
