I’m Jared Miller, Associate Minister, Together in Mission here at St. Andrew’s. I also serve as Director of Work at TheCreek – our ministry extension into the neighbourhoods South of Fish Creek. I live in Shawnessy with my wife and daughter, and our Dog. Before moving to Calgary, I served congregations in Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, and Quebec, coming into ministry out of Grad school where I studied Ethics.
I grew up in Nova Scotia where going to church was something it seemed like everyone did. As I grew up, I started looking for an expression of faith that fit where I felt I was, and I tried everything. From Fundamentalism to Agnosticism, with everything in between, and getting nowhere, I started looking for thinkers who could help put words to my frustrations.
So when I think about the question: Who has inspired your faith journey and why? The only answer I can think of is the one thinker who tries specifically not to breed comfort, but invites us to sit in our lack.
Peter Rollins is a Belfast Theologian, a practitioner of ‘pyro-theology’ and a thinker who invites the church to see the beauty of doubt – not as the antithesis of faith, but an honest rejection of a cultural addiction to certainty.
A bit about me:
If you weren’t doing what you do today, what other job would you have? I love food. I realized early on that if I wanted to have good food in my life I either needed to pay for it (which is expensive) or figure out how to make it (which is hard). So I started getting jobs in restaurants where I could surround myself with great food. If I wasn’t in ministry, I imagine I’d probably be a chef.
What’s the craziest thing you have done?
My best friend and I in high school had a motto: every path leads somewhere. So one day we decided to test that theory and set out into the woods on the outskirts of town without a map or compass. We found the path we were on finally met a road at a campground a 40minute drive outside of town.
What’s the most unusual thing in your desk drawer?
A bag of dog treats.
