Growing Life Together with God

St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church
LinX Email for February 25, 2026
March 1, 2026 - Born of Spirit

March 1, 2026 - Born of Spirit

Rev. Laurie McKay - Lent 2

When things don’t make sense, can we trust the Spirit to sort it out? Nicodemus is confused by the words “born from above” or “born again”. Can we really control how or when we are “born”? Abram isn’t given clear instructions, just a promise of blessing, and yet, at age 75, begins a journey. In faith we rely on the Spirit to blow where it will, and trust it leads to blessing and life.

Grateful, Thankful, Blessed

Grateful, Thankful, Blessed

Let them eat cake! … and let’s express gratitude to Rev. Laurie McKay!!

Around this time 2 years ago St. Andrew’s received a gift in the person of Rev. Laurie McKay. This past Sunday we celebrated this milestone with cake following our worship service (thank you ‘Baker Gail Prevost’)! Laurie’s energy, enthusiasm and JOY have been contagious, which is a good thing, because we run just to keep up with her!! Laurie saw that we had committed to do more intentional work around inclusiveness with our Indigenous and LGBTQI+ communities, and she has embraced this work and helped move us forward in many ways. I’ve worked with Laurie for 2 years now, and I don’t think I’ve ever met ANYONE who is as inclusive as she is. Rev. Laurie has a heart for shared ministry. She loves it when children and youth can be included in leadership, when people from the congregation are up on the chancel with her sharing in worship leadership. She has warmly welcomed our Ministers in Association, and enjoys working with each of them. Children, youth, young, old - SHARED ministry - Growing Life Together with God. We are grateful to you Laurie, and look forward to continuing the work we are called to do as we are woven into the neighbourhood, growing disciples who love like Jesus.

ANNUAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING

ANNUAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING

Our ACM (Annual Congregational Meeting) will be held Sunday, MARCH 8th. There will be a short 5-10 minute break immediately following our morning worship service, and then we will gather in the Sanctuary for our ACM. This is an important time for St. Andrew’s as we look back at 2025 - and look forward to 2026! For those who are unable to be with us in person, you can still participate by ZOOM. Watch next weeks’ LinX for details.

Ladies Guild

Ladies Guild

The March Ladies Guild meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 10 beginning at 1:30 p.m. with tea and snacks in the Karl English Lounge.
We’ll enjoy two presentations – the first one, “Six Dots to Literacy” by our very own Pauline Dowell, during which she’ll talk about her days as a Braille Assistant in many schools with students in grades 1-12.
The second presentation will be made by a representative from the Alberta Sports and Recreation Association for the Blind.
Having just enjoyed the winter Olympics you’re invited to come and learn how this organization works with blind and visually impaired children and adults to provide them with meaningful sports experiences which serve to enrich their lives.
Everyone is invited!

A Room Makeover in Progress

A Room Makeover in Progress

The Fireside Room on our lower level needs a little love. Currently the room is very tired looking and is not particularly functional. The room would be much more widely used by both the congregation and outside groups looking for space, if the room had a fairly simple makeover.
The Rainbow Team is initiating this makeover and is hoping to use the room to provide education and support for families who have members who are gender transitioning. Some funding has been provided through a Presbytery grant.
A relaxing and comfortable space would really help us to implement this program, but we could really use your help! If you have neutral-coloured, comfortable seating (couch, loveseat, chairs) in gently used condition or a coffee table, end tables, lamps or neutral area carpets (8’x10’ or 10’x12’) that are looking for a new home, we would be interested in hearing from you. Please contact Lynn Judd (587-438-5801) or Rhonda Wishart (403-614-9924) and we can see if what you have matches our specific needs. Thanks!!

Being a Light onto the World – StAC Benevolent Fund

Being a Light onto the World – StAC Benevolent Fund

As highlighted in the Feb. 8, 2026 service, StAC set up a Benevolent Fund in 2019 for the purpose of providing short term financial assistance to individuals or families in need. Session created a formal policy governing the operation of the Fund and the Fund was created with seed money from an anonymous donor. The church receives several requests for emergency funding several times per year, some requests from members, some not, and we have done our best to meet the requests of those with a demonstrated need. The requests are generally for unpaid electricity and gas bills, often when disconnection is threatened, or for help with rent. The Fund relies solely on donations from StAC’s congregation, and the funds are running low. Consideration of this worthy cause by our members would be greatly appreciated. Donations may be made online (see the dropdown list on our Donate page on our Website), through the collection plate, or stopping by the office.

Lent Devotionals

Lent Devotionals

Two options for those who are using our
‘Online Lent Devotionals Options’:

St. Andrew’s Hall (Presbyterian Church in Canada’s West Coast college) Lenten Devotional Guide offers a daily scripture reading and prayer, along with a theological reflection.

Presbyterian Outlook (Presbyterian Church USA) - this devotional journeys through the Gospel of Matthew — a Gospel shaped in conflict, fragile community and deep disagreement — and invites readers to follow Jesus with humility, courage and faithfulness when the ground feels unsteady.  It contains a daily Scripture-based reflection, reflection questions and prayers, and a pastoral voice that names the weight without rushing past hope.

Have a ball in the Foyer!!

Have a ball in the Foyer!!

You are invited to join the G&G Lent Project - The Ball is in Your Court, as we follow Jesus' commandment to love our neighbours.  Choose One special thing you can do over Lent to share God's love with others by caring for people outside your immediate family and outside our church family.  You can pick up a ball any Sunday in the foyer, and bring it back April 19 to write down the special thing you did over Lent.  We will gather them all together during worship and see how far God's love can spread through us when we love like Jesus.

Stars and Wishes

Stars and Wishes

During the month of February, and again Sunday, March 1 you have an opportunity to participate in our “Stars & Wishes” activity. This is an initiative of session - to consult the  congregation on what YOU think we are doing well now - STARS (what are we known for, what are our strengths); and what YOU would like to see us do in the future - WISHES (how can we meet a hurt or need in the community, a program that would further our vision, a mission idea that you feel the spirit is calling us to pursue).
It’s easy, easy! Just write your stars and wishes on a sticky note found at a table in the Foyer, (or you can send a note to the office (office@standrewscalgary.ca) before March 4). After that time, these will be grouped, summarized, and reported back to the congregation by Session, so together we implement our vision of being Woven into the neighbourhood, growing disciples who love like Jesus.

GriefShare starts March 2nd

GriefShare starts March 2nd

Grief is not a disease or disorder, it’s an emotional, physical and spiritual behavioral response to any significant loss, most commonly the death of a loved one. Facilitators Judie Coleman, Clay Kuhn and Alice Williams would be happy to answer any questions you have about the program that starts MARCH 2 (Monday nights from 7:00 - 8:30 pm in the Lower Fireside Room)

Linking with the Sudanese!

Linking with the Sudanese!

We are seeking a small team to help strengthen our relationship with the Sudanese congregation that worships alongside us at St. Andrew's

This team will act as a liaison between the Sudanese congregation and St. Andrew's and may assist with:

  • Supporting their missional work;
  • Helping draft a covenant agreement between the Sudanese congregation and St. Andrew's;
  • Facilitating communication between both congregations;
  • Encouraging and coordinating shared and integrating activities;
  • Assisting with other needs as they arise.

This is a meaningful opportunity to build relationships, practice hospitality, and grow together in faith and community. If you feel called to be part of this work, please contact Rev. Laurie in the church office or Lorna Andronikou (lorna.kearnes@gmail.com). ~ Lorna & Laurie

If you enjoyed one of St. Andrew’s Christmas puddings from our Bazaar we’d be happy to recycle the jars! They are 500ml wide mouth glass jars with metal rings. They can be left in the main kitchen or on the welcome desk.
Thank you!

Food Bank Bags

Food Bank Bags

The coordinators of the Food Bank would like to thank everyone who has contributed recyclable bags for clients when picking up food on Saturdays here at St. Andrew’s. At this time, there are enough bags to last a good long while, so we will not be collecting bags again until the need is there. We’ll put out another appeal at that time. Thanks!

Refugee Work in the Presbytery

Refugee Work in the Presbytery

Are you interested in helping get refugees out of refugee camps?
We have a group working at the Presbytery level to support this process, and we need help!
If you have time to help with writing the applications (good English skills), you may be very helpful in the initial steps. These stories need to be submitted by the end of March to the Presbyterian Church in Canada.
Many of the South Sudanese congregation have family in refugee camps in Ethiopia, Uganda, or have fled to other neighbouring countries, because of the intense fighting that is currently happening in South Sudan.
The good news is that, while the Presbyterian Church in Canada is only allotted a small number in comparison to the need, the Sudanese are in a different category and are often fast-tracked because they are in an active war zone. What might normally take 2 or 3 years between application and refugees arriving in Canada could take only 6 months in these emergencies.
If you are interested in supporting refugees, please let either Rev. Laurie or the office know, and we will connect you to the next meeting of the refugee working group of Presbytery.
There are other ways to help as well: fundraising, meeting people at the airport, helping source furniture/clothing/household items, and helping enroll children into school, or arranging appointments
– you get the idea!
